Arsenal & Barcelona stars included as Uruguay name squad for Copa America

The Uruguayan Football Association have this evening unveiled the panel of players set to be tasked with navigating the nation’s upcoming Copa America campaign.

All to play for

After being postponed due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic last summer, the Copa America, like the European Championships, has been pencilled in to take place over the weeks ahead.

The tournament is scheduled to get underway on Sunday night, when hosts Brazil face off with Venezuela, before concluding on the 11th of July.

The giants of South American football have, as expected, all secured qualification, with the aforementioned Selecao set to be joined in their efforts to clinch glory by the likes of Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Colombia.

Joining such heavyweights in the 10-team strong competition, meanwhile, will be the less favoured quintet of Paraguay, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia and Peru.

Cavani & Suarez to lead the line

One country struggling for form ahead of the fast-approaching Copa getting underway are Uruguay.

La Celeste were back in World Cup qualifying action over the last week, and stuttered to a pair of stalemates versus Paraguay and Venezuela, making it just one win in five heading into their Copa opener on Saturday week.

Nevertheless, Oscar Tabarez, as outlined above, has this evening confirmed the 26-man squad set to go about defying the odds over the coming month.

And the Celeste panel is a star-studded one.

The headline names, as expected, come in the form of front two Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez, with the evergreen Diego Godin joined by the likes of Jose Gimenez and Sebastian Coates at the back.

Also included amongst Tabarez’s defensive options are veteran Martin Caceres and Barcelona talent Ronald Araujo.

Uruguay’s midfield is too packed with recognisable faces, with Real Madrid standout Federico Valverde named alongside Rodrigo Bentancur of Juventus, Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira and Matias Vecino, fresh off the back of a Serie A title with Inter Milan.
