Lloris’ Tottenham & Chelsea comparison

Ahead of Sunday’s North London Derby, Hugo Lloris has made a comparison between Tottenham and Chelsea that makes very little sense.

Before the clash with Arsenal, Tottenham have not been in the best form.

They scrapped past Wolves on penalties in the League Cup in their last match. Before that, they lost 3-0 vs Chelsea, drew 2-2 with Rennes and lost 3-0 to Crystal Palace – last winning a match in 90 minutes vs Watford on August 29th.

In defence of Spurs’ poor form, Hugo Lloris has called for them to be given more time to gel as a squad with a new manager.

This, on the surface, seems like a fairly reasonable ask. However, Lloris’ argument then falls down when he starts to compare the Lilywhites with Chelsea.

The Blues are one of the best sides in England currently and Lloris seems to believe that Chelsea are succeeding because they know each other well and have won many trophies together.

“We have to recognise at this moment that Chelsea are a much better team than us. But we are still looking for improvement and when we look at the potential of our squad, it’s very good. We just need to work and to carry on.

“You know when you are not at your best, so the confidence is going away and we were a little bit in between.

“And because Chelsea is so good, they know each other well, they won many trophies together, the confidence is high. And you know when they feel it’s the moment to press the button, they press, and it’s like a machine.”

Why Lloris’ comparison makes no sense

The reality, however, is that Tuchel only took over at the end of January and already had his side dominating teams just a few weeks into his reign.

And, despite what Lloris’ comments may suggest, the majority of Tottenham’s squad has known each other for as long as, if not longer, than Chelsea’s has. In the defeat to Crystal Palace, for example, Emerson Royal was the only summer signing in the XI, much like Romelu Lukaku is generally Chelsea’s only summer signing in their squads this season.

Lloris then claims it is too early to judge them as a group of players and as a team with a new manager:

“Obviously people are watching every game and analysing every game, and that’s normal. But as a player, as a group of players, as a team with the manager, it’s too early to judge us.

“We need time, but in football we don’t really have time. You need to perform and get results for a club like Tottenham. “Sometimes you can have a great first half of the season and second half… boof! “The truth is at the end of the season, where you finish in the table.”

The group of players argument is largely nonsense as most of Spurs’ squad has been the same for a while now.

And again, if Lloris wants to compare Chelsea and Tottenham, Tuchel came in midway through a season and beat Atletico Madrid within a few weeks before winning the Champions League after just over three months at the helm.

Nuno has had a pre-season, well over a month of games is nowhere near the level Chelsea were at following the German’s first month in charge. Of course, it is fine to say a manger may need more time, but Lloris’ argument clearly falls down with the Chelsea comparison.
